Sor Juana Festival

Sor Juana Inés de la Crúz was a 17th-century Mexican nun considered to be the first feminist of the Americas. She wrote the first feminist manifesto defending women’s right to education. Sor Juana was an intellectual, scholar, celebrated playwright, mathematician, poet, rebel nun and supernova — a woman who defied the role traditional Mexican society imposed upon women at the time. Sor Juana continues to be a source of inspiration for women across the world.

The NMMA’s Sor Juana Festival honors this woman, so ahead of her time, with a wide range of performances by women.

This year’s Sor Juana Festival also celebrates 25 years of the NMMA and its work showcasing Mexican culture, history and accomplishments to the public. These special venues take place throughout Chicago.
