In 1995 The National Museum of Mexican Art (formerly known as the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum) started it’s first children’s celebration in observance of Mexico's national holiday, Día del Niño (Day of the Child), which is celebrated on April 30th. The event was such a great success that the Museum decided to repeat this fun celebration while finding larger venues each year to accommodate the rapid growth in attendance. In 2004, CLOCC (Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children) partnered with the Museum in an effort to create awareness regarding the alarming concern in obesity among children. The Museum wanted to reach the community and inform them of the health concerns that parents should know about their children. As a result, the festival was moved to it’s new home at the UIC Pavilion holding a record breaking attendance of over 12,000 people!
The Chicago Día Del Niño has now grown to become the largest children’s celebration dedicated to promoting healthy living among children using fun interactive games and art activities, fitness activities that include free prizes, health screenings, raffles, and even live entertainment from well known performers like José Luis Orozco. The Chicago Día del Niño Family Festival takes place each spring during the month of April and is kicked-off with a fun, 2-mile health walk to the UIC Pavilion. This festival is definitely an event you should not allow your child to miss
During the summer, students from different schools that are either in high school or college, volunteer to help with the different children's programs that we offer. High school students also drop in throughout the year to do community service as part of their graduation requirements. We also encourage fraternities, sororities, and college clubs or organizations to volunteer in order to meet their community service requirements as well. In addition, we are looking to recruit about 200 volunteers for the annual Dia del Nino (Day of the Child) celebration in April.
