African Presence in Mexico traveling exhibition

Virgen de Guadalupe art purchase for permanent collection

Journey into México

This exhibition presents an evocative pictorial memoir of different faces of Mexico as
documented from 1947 to 1955 by the photographer Charles Townsend (1896-1975).
His images carry insightful personal impressions of the various peoples, places, and forces
of history that continue to shape the life of the Mexican nation. The exhibition is curated
by his son for whom those travel years were formative. Richard F. Townsend is a noted
Mesoamerican scholar and the Chairman of the Department of African and Amerindian
Art at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Exhibition sponsors: Chicago Park District, Illinois Arts Council, Chicago Department
of Cultural Affairs

Exhibition continues to October 4th, 2009.
